Grimshaw’s competition-winning design for Pulkovo Airport formed the centrepiece of a €1.2 billion expansion of St Petersburg’s airport. Developed for Northern Capital Gateway, the project progressed from Grimshaw’s 2007 competition win to the new terminal’s opening in 2013, with wider works completed in 2015. Grimshaw designed the 110,000 m² terminal concept, with Pascall+Watson as executive architect, Ramboll providing detailed engineering, and IC İçtaş–Astaldi delivering construction. Its distinctive roof brings daylight into the terminal while managing the heavy snow and meltwater of St Petersburg’s winters. Together with the renovation of Pulkovo-1, the expansion addressed the client’s over-capacity airport and planned for up to 17 million passengers a year.
