For Gatwick Airport Limited, Grimshaw developed proposals to transform the South Terminal forecourt and concourse as part of the airport’s £1 billion investment programme. The central challenge was to ease congestion and conflicting passenger flows at a busy interchange serving rail, bus, coach and car passengers, while keeping the terminal operational. Grimshaw’s design prioritised clearer routes, accessible connections and a more legible entrance, with daylight and improved finishes bringing greater comfort to the concourse. The concourse served up to 18 million arriving and departing passengers annually, making capacity and ease of movement critical to the brief. Gatwick allocated £30 million to its entrance and forecourt improvements, with construction works beginning in 2010 and the new entrance opening in 2012.
